Pulitzer prize-winning Lucian Perkins has worked everywhere from war zones in Afghanistan to backstage at New York fashion shows. Whatever the story, Lucian’s photos display a profound empathy with and compassion for his subjects.
The Client
Lucian Perkins is a renowned photojournalist celebrated for his empathetic and powerful imagery, winning prestigious awards including two Pulitzer Prizes, while documenting a diverse range of subjects from war zones to social issues, with a strong focus on humanitarian stories, innovative storytelling, and contributions to education and mentorship in the field.
The Challenge
The challenge for the project was to deliver a visitor experience that respected Perkins’ deep sense of empathy for his subjects and his ability to document the human condition in powerful and profound ways. Just like his images, the site design would need to highlight the resilience, dignity, and struggles of individuals in challenging circumstances, drawing attention to their stories and promoting a greater understanding of global issues.
The Strategy
The design strategy focused on framing the content in a way that invited exploration and discovery while remaining as invisible as impossible. I maintained this focus in two ways. The first was to implement an interface that did not compete with the content. The second was to establish a cinematic flow through the collections that pushed exposition to the background and gave voice to the photographs themselves.
Photography
The site used visual design and interaction design in concert with each other to create an experience that engaged visitors without competing with the content. The spare elegance of the visual design kept the images in the foreground. Meanwhile, the interaction design embedded seamless transitions at all scales from button states to page swaps, creating a sense of continuity and intention for visitors.
Multimedia
Perkins is known for his innovative approach to storytelling. He has embraced new media and technologies to enhance his work, including multimedia projects that combine photography, video, and audio to create immersive and impactful narratives.
Educational Focus
In addition to his work as a photojournalist, Perkins is dedicated to education and mentorship. He has taught photography and visual storytelling at various institutions, sharing his expertise and inspiring the next generation of photojournalists to pursue impactful storytelling.
Content managers used the site’s CMS to maintain and update Perkins’ blog. The blog was Perkins’ medium for communicating news about current and upcoming projects and shows as well as four decades of insight into the practice of photography for aspiring photojournalists.
