Lucian Perkins

Pulitzer prize-winning Lucian Perkins has worked everywhere from war zones in Afghanistan to backstage at New York fashion shows. Whatever the story, Lucian’s photos display a profound empathy with and compassion for his subjects.

Level three — a caption on black, and nothing else. "Soldiers watch as the gypsies are put on buses for deportation." Fifteen words including the caption. The endpoint of the subtractive pattern: the photograph, one sentence, no interface. The same move as the Galileo zoom view and the Rembrandt comparison.

Overview

01 / Problem
Lucian Perkins is a two-time Pulitzer-winning photojournalist. His portfolio site had to present decades of war, humanitarian and American stories without the interface competing with the photographs.
02 / Design Challenge
As Bluecadet's Lead Developer, Russ designed the interactions and built the site and its blog CMS, working from the visual designers' mockups.
03 / Approach
The interface strips itself away at each level until one photograph and its caption fill the frame. Stories are grouped by place and by his own series title, "Postcards from America," with no accent color anywhere.
04 / Outcome
Captures of the finished site survive; no traffic data does.
